'The Tank' coming home

Bahamian professional boxer, Sherman "The Tank" Williams is expected to be in town today.

Tank, who has put The Bahamas on the map as far as international, professional boxing is concerned, who's originally from Grand Bahama, is coming back home today for a little R & R.

But Tank is expected to do more than just get some rest and relaxation while at home. He will come home bearing gifts for amateur boxers.

"Tank said that he will be bringing us some gloves and other boxing equipment when he comes home on Thursday," said boxing coach, Terry Goldsmith.

"As a number of people may know, Tank, along with Floyd Seymour had given amateur boxers here some gloves and other stuff last year. Those gifts were well received and have been in great use."

In fact, Goldsmith said that even today, all of the gloves that are being used by amateur boxers at the YMCA Boxing Club are the gloves that were presented by Tank and Floyd.

The equipment that was presented by "Tank" and Seymour were split between the Genesis Boxing Club and the newly formed YMCA Boxing Club.

Goldsmith said that he's looking forward to "Tank's" visit, not just for the gifts he's expected to bring, but because it will give the up and coming boxers an opportunity to get up close and personal with a professional boxer, who is also a Bahamian.

Goldsmith said it should serve as motivation for the young boxers.

The visit back home by Tank comes on the heel of a recent loss which "The Tank" suffered in October, when he fought in Germany.

Tank had said, before the Germany fight, that once that event was completed, he was considering coming home to Freeport for a visit.

"We are proud of what Tank is doing abroad in representing this country and making the way for other Bahamian boxers to get to the professional level," said Goldsmith.
