Laverne Eve can still boast of having a powerful arm when it comes to tossing the javelin.

A veteran javelin thrower Eve, at the age of 40 secured the Bahamas' first medal at the Common-wealth Games with a throw of 60.54m.

Eve, who received the silver medal remained an aggressive contender for the gold. However, South African javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen got her country's track and field campaign off to a dream start by winning the event.

Competing in front of over 67, 000 predominantly Australian athletics fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Potchefstroom's Eve held her own.

Viljoen won the event with a throw of 60.72m.

Eve still holds the Bahamian national discus (52.52) and hammer throw (54.90) records.

Eve simply defies her age and all logic. At this stage one would think she should be showing obvious signs of slowing down, or finding it difficult to get off a good series of throws.

But for Eve, it appears as though it is just the beginning.

ONE CLASS ACT — Even at the age of 40, Bahamian veteran javelin thrower Laverne Eve remains a class act. Eve won The Bahamas' first medal in the Commonwealth Games over the weekend.
