Grand Bahama Players to stage latest Headley play By GENEA NOEL Freeport News Reporter genea@nasguard.com
The Grand Bahama Players (GBP) will honour local playwright Neil Headley with a production of his most recent work, No Money No Honey, tonight at the Regency Theatre. The event will also serve as a fundraiser for Headley's medical expenses as he was diagnosed in January of this year with bone cancer. Officials from the GBP noted that Headley played a major role in the organization and has produced many humorous plays including Traffic Court, Dream House, Dollars and Sense and Cash 3. Headley adopted The Baha-mas as his home and sometime during the 1990s, his notebooks were found and a number of annotations which he had collected were compiled into a play called Traffic Court. It was then that Head-ley's talent for writing was discovered. After a late start, Headley's sense of humour and dry wit, which characterize his work, motivated him to continue writing. He has also written many skits and is currently writing Pearline, a Caribbean-based musical. Headley has appeared on stage in a few minor roles with the Grand Bahama Play-ers and on other occasions he participated as a stage hand. Headley was born in St. Michael, Barbados, and ar-rived in The Bahamas in 1953 to pursue his career as a draughtsman with the Minis-try of Works in Nassau. He subsequently qualified as a quantity surveyor and work-ed with several companies in their capacity. His most recent posting was that of chief building inspector in the Tech-nical Department of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, a post he held until December 2008. His hobbies of guitar playing, bridge and lawn tennis became a huge part of his life and his latent interest in drama and the comedic arts caused him over the years to record certain observations and annotations that he relays in his work. Tickets for tonight's event can be purchased from the Seventeen Shop for $20. Showtime begins at 8:00 p.m. |
