Seeking justice for her son A mother is demanding justice for her son who she claims has been beaten by prison staff and left paralysed. Lavern Bauld claims her son Edwin Jr has been brutalised in Fox Hill Prison where he is remanded while awaiting a retrial. Mrs. Bauld said her son told her a fight had broken out in the prison, and he was maced and later placed in the showers by officers and beaten by them. She said he had collapsed as his body became numb. He claims that two weeks later as he was preparing to go to Grand Bahama for a court hearing, he felt he could not walk. He told this to the officers but they did not believe him and under the authorization of a senior police officer he was thrown into a wheel chair and thrown about like rag doll. Bauld claims he hit his head on a wall and when officers realized he really could not walk they admitted him to hospital. While in hospital, his mother said she visited him and he relayed the story to her which she wrote down and brought to this newspaper. Mrs. Bauld said she has called on attorney Rengin Johnson for assistance. A letter from Johnson to Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade written on February 21, 2012, asks for an investigation of the matter as Bauld claims he is now paralyzed throughout his body. His mother confirmed that she saw him he was unable to move and could barely talk. He has since been put back in the prison but no date has been set for his retrial so far. Edwin Bauld Jr. and Wilfred McFee were tried and convicted of the murder of 28-year-old police officer Cpl Eddison Bain in 2010. They were condemned to death, but an appeal which led to an order of a retrial. With this he was moved to the main prison area await the date for the retrial. Cpl Bain's body was discovered in a ditch near Casuarina Bridge in Grand Bahama on October 22, 2007. He had been bound by his hands and feet, and a boulder was resting on his face. Bauld's girlfriend had confessed to luring the police officer to Island Seas beach, where the duo allegedly accosted and kidnapped Bain. Bauld and McPhee were convicted of murder, kidnapping, two counts of robbery and one count of stealing and sentenced to death. Dr. Elliston Rahming, Superintendent at Fox Hill Prison, failed to respond to calls from The Freeport News. |
