Following the Bahamas Swimming Federation Trials on March 21 and 22, five swimmers from SWIFT Grand Bahama were selected to swim in the 2014 CARIFTA Swimming Championships this April in Aruba.
They join 15 members of Swift Swimming in Nassau to make up 20 of the 36 member team.
The Freeport swimmers who qualified for their first CARIFTA Championships were Tenniya Martin who will be competing in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m freestyle and all of the 11/12 girls relays.
She is joined by Aliyah Lafrenier who will compete in the 11/12 year old 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke. They will be joined by two time CARIFTA qualifiers Darren Laing in the 11/12 age group and Jasmine Gibson in the 13/14 age group.
Darren will be swimming in the 50m, 100m and 200 butterfly, the 200m and 400m freestyle and the 11/12 boys relays.
Jasmine will swim in the 50m and 100m freestyle, the 50m and 100m butterfly and the 13/14 girls relays.
Completing the five from SWIFT Grand Bahama is five-time CARIFTA qualifier Joanna Evans who will swim in the 15/17 age group. Joanna will have a heavy CARIFTA schedule swimming the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, the 200m and 400m individual medley, the 200m backstroke and all of the 15/17 girls relays.
The SWIFT Grand Bahama swimmers had an outstanding two days of competition, all swimming seconds inside their previous best performances to secure their places on the CARIFTA Team.
Their coach Andy Loveitt who will be joining them in Aruba was overjoyed by their outstanding performances.
“All five swimmers took their swimming to a higher level and well away from their competition.
“Four of them have already posted qualifying times for The Caribbean Island Swimming Championships in July in Barbados.
“It is a true reflection to working hard every time they practice,” said Coach Andy Loveitt.
