Late start not a deterrent for Jaguars

by: Barbara Walkin, Night Editor

Transportation was an issue for the St. Georges High Jaguars U17 team yesterday, which resulted in the players arriving late for their game at the Jack Hayward High School (JHHS) gym; however, the athletes did not allow that to "bench" their plans.

Another challenge for the players was not having the alloted time to warm-up before the starting buzzer; so from all indications, this should have been a game that did not end up in the winning column for the Jags, but that was not the case.

The Jags were going up against the JHHSâ Wildcats, who had already taken advantage of their late arrival ... warming up for some 15 to 20 minutes.

Without much time to organize themselves and the referees whistles going off, the Jags took to the court.

And, just to prove a point the Wildcats' wing man sank a three-pointer in the first few minutes of the game, sending a message to the Jags, which by the way they did not heed.

Although it was a low scoring game, 16-9 in favor of the Jaguars, the defensive play of the late comers proved too much for the Wildcats.

Then, of course, for the "Cats, there was a referee changing issue which sent the coach into a frenzy for a few minutes.

A time-out was called, the Wildcats' coach shouted, apologies were made and play continued.

In the end, while it mattered that they were late the Jags still collected the win.
