The South Andros High School Anniversary Committee is planning a six-month long 40th Anniversary Celebration and wants all alumni to join in on the fun.
During a press conference held at Candid Security Ltd Offices on Monday, September 26, members of the committee, including Dr. Cecil Thompson spoke about the upcoming festivities.
South Andros High School (SAHS) will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary on March 31, 2017. On that date back in 1977 it marked the birth of the best high school in The Bahamas. Towards this end the school will commence celebrating 40 years in existence under the theme, ‘Climbing Higher Towards Success.’
The events will occur during the six months leading up to March 31, 2017.
Public Relations Officer for the committee Cleveland Duncombe provided details about the starter weekend.
“Our starter weekend is Friday, September 30, 2016. We are having a special assembly and broadcasting live on ZNS radio. We hope to interview alumni on this day to get an historical overview of the school and its progress throughout the 40 years,” he said. “We will conclude this weekend with a service of thanksgiving at the Friendship Native Baptist Church on Sunday, October 2, 2016,” he added.
According to Duncombe almost every month there is a calendar activity, which will be twinned with the 40th celebration under the theme. Some of these activities include an Annual Basketball Tournament, Career’s Fest, talent show/Christmas production, and family fun day, to name a few.
He furthered that it is important for alumni to be involved in the events as much as possible.
“We are asking alumni and former staff to participate in as many of these events as possible. Moreover, would you kindly share your experience at SAHS with us in a brief write-up? Please include highlights (social, academic and athletic) from your years. Pictures are extremely welcome. Kindly send us scanned/digital copies of all photos of and around SAHS. Additionally, would you kindly spread the word to your contacts, former class and schoolmates? Much obliged,” he said.
He stated that they are also planning on creating a commemorative booklet and a recognition banquet during the final weekend of March 31, 2017.
Duncombe said that their aim is to honor past principals and administrators as well as start an Annual Scholarship fund to assist current students in their pursuit of tertiary education.
All class years are invited to reconnect with your classmates to participate/become involved with celebration events throughout the school year. Simply contact the school to share your ideas on what form your participation will take.
“We are also seeking sponsorship for the booklet at the following levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum,” he said.
He finally mentioned that in January 2017 there would be a 40-day event leading up to the official anniversary date.
Dr. Cecil Thompson also expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming series of events, as a former SAHS Principal and a member of the committee.
“First I would like to commend Mr. Duncombe for the fine and exemplary leadership he has given to the South Andros High School 40th Anniversary celebrations,” he said.
Dr. Thompson reflected that Duncombe was a student at SAHS during his tenure at the school, and stated that serving as principal was one of the best professional and personal experiences of his life.
“This makes me very proud especially seeing my former students,” he said.
Dr. Thompson finally stated that he was looking forward to the events with great anticipation.
